On a cold October night, shortly after staggering away from the Barley Mow, Debbie Green is abducted. The fifteen year old’s poisoned body is discovered early the following morning in the undergrowth of a rural lane. Her seemingly motiveless death mystifies even the police. Two weeks later, underneath the railway bridge where he had been constructing a graffiti mural, the still-warm body of Jonathan Braidwood is stumbled upon by an elderly couple. His wrists are bound, neck bruised, and the same home-made concoction circulated through his veins. More teenage murders follow; dysfunctional petty criminals with long lists of anti-social misdemeanour’s and banning orders. And with the eradication of such troublesome yobs, the outrage that greeted the first two seemingly innocent deaths subsides. Teenagers are in fear of their lives. Pensioners have reclaimed their town centre and for all but the youth, life in Droitwich improves by the day. One month after the killings commenced, Detective Inspector Jim Jarvis and his incident team at West Mercia Police remain baffled. Baffled by the motive, baffled by the identity of the perpetrator. The time has come for Professor Martin Noakes from Birmingham’s Regional Forensic Psychology Service to build up a psychological profile of the killer. Would his expertise help to uncover the murderer’s identity? And how many teenagers have still to die before a personal revenge is satisfied? With the hither-too sleepy town of Droitwich Spa at its core, Youthenasia poses questions about morality on a journey that connects Cornwall, the Lake District and Munich into the landscapes.
